Anthony McGrath column

Hopefully the start of Twenty20 can bring with it some sunshine!

Our week just gone in Colwyn Bay was very similar to the last time we were there in 2004. Back then we played 51 overs and this time it was only 34.

Not only is it frustrating for us as players, a thought must be spared for the club who have lost a fixture they were looking forward to and the spectators too. There were a lot of people from Yorkshire who had booked their holidays to coincide with the match.

You ask any cricketer and they want to be out there playing and getting runs and wickets under their belts. When you’re on and off constantly, it’s difficult to get into a rhythm.

It was difficult to keep yourself amused because there wasn’t much to do at the ground.

When you’re at a county ground there are gyms about, televisions and wi-fi. But it was back to the old days of doing crosswords in the paper and messing about with games and a little bit of football.

Other teams are struggling too and it’s the signature of the season so far that there’s been so much time lost to the weather. It’s a short enough season as it is, so you don’t want rain interrupting every game you play.

I was disappointed not to be included in the side last week as they opted to play two spinners. I feel I’ve been in good form with the bat especially, but that’s sport. You’ve got to take the decisions on the chin.

Sometimes it doesn’t go your way and there’s no point sulking about it. Hopefully I’ll be back in for the next game. As it turned out, I didn’t miss too much.

I don’t think we’ve been at our best in the Championship, if we’re being honest, but we’ve accumulated points and are in a good position at the halfway point. Although we’ve played some good cricket, we know we can get better.

I’m really looking forward to Twenty20. We’ve failed to make finals day before and that’s something we want to aim for.

We’ve got a good squad and we should have done much better in this competition in the past.

We’ve signed South African David Miller as our second overseas player but I don’t know too much about him. I’ve seen him on telly and know he played at Durham last year.

Anyone who comes into our team will be welcomed. I’m sure he’ll do well for us.
