A business-like performance by Yorkshire put them in a good position against Nottinghamshire at Headingley yesterday and opened up the prospect of them winning the match and easing their relegation worries.
They closed the day on 127 for two in their second innings with an overall lead of 170 and more quick runs today could see them setting their opponents a challenging target.
Adil Rashid and fellow leg-spinner Mark Lawson grabbed two wickets in three balls and they continued to make inroads, assisted by Jason Gillespie and Deon Kruis, until Notts were rescued from 118 for five by Australian David Hussey, who struck the ball well on his way to his fifth century of the season off 129 balls with 15 boundaries.
Hussey was last out when he was deceived and bowled by Lawson for 117 after receiving 149 deliveries and striking 16 fours and a six, Lawson ending up with four for 42 and Rashid three for 76.
Having acquired a useful lead of 43, Yorkshire were anxious to add quickly to it and Craig White began with some fine cover drives but he went and edged the ball before tea from Ryan Sidebottom to Fleming in the slips.
Joe Sayers was the perfect foil for Darren Lehmann after the interval as the Australian galloped to 48 from 41 balls before he called Sayers for a second run and was beaten to the crease by Will Smith's well-aimed throw to the wicketkeeper.
The end for Hoggard
Matthew Hoggard will miss the remainder of Yorkshire's season with a small abdominal strain.
But Yorkshire physio Scott McAllister stressed that Hoggard's MRI scan had revealed no significant injury, revealing he had been withdrawn from Yorkshire's two remaining matches as a precaution following consultations with the England and Wales Cricket Board.
Hoggard injured himself in the warm-up to the Championship clash with Nottinghamshire on Wednesday morning.
Yorkshire play their final NatWest Pro40 League match against Hampshire at Headingley tomorrow, followed by next week's final Championship game with Durham, also at Headingley.
Promising young left-hander Adam Lyth is set to make his debut against Hampshire Hawks, while once again Craig White, Deon Kruis and Jason Gillespie are all rested. Paceman Tim Bresnan makes his first senior appearance since going down with a back injury in late July.
