Hanging Heaton have made a great start to life back in Division One of the Bradford League after returning to the top flight as Division Two champions.

They are one of only three sides to have won both their matches – Farsley and Pudsey St Lawrence are the others – and their impressive 108-run win over Woodlands condemned the former champions to a second defeat of the season.

Heaton, who earned a maximum 20 points, owed much to a superb all-round performance from Rob McFarlane, who made 63 as they totalled 233-5 before taking 7-60 as Woodlands were dismissed for 125.

Lorenzo Ingram has begun the season in great style, making his second successive unbeaten century in Farsley’s 74-run win over Baildon.

The Jamaican batsman struck two sixes and 19 fours in his 125 not out, putting on 242 for the fourth wicket with 20-year-old Joe Greaves, who scored one run more including five sixes and 14 fours as Farsley amassed 292-4.

Baildon never seriously challenged this formidable total and settled for 218-6, with Ahsan Butt making 65 not out as new skipper Ian Philliskirk took three wickets against the club he left at the end of last season.

Gareth Clough (4-15) and Pudsey St Lawrence skipper James Smith (4-45) led the way as East Bierley collapsed from 70-0 to 153 all out.

Saints achieved their target for the loss of six wickets, Mark Robertshaw making 38 and Smith 36.

There was drama at Intake Road where Undercliffe and Manningham Mills were involved in the season’s first tie after a fluctuating game.

Undercliffe lost their last two wickets with the scores level, Yorkshire pace bowler Moin Ashraf being run out before last man Kurtis Whippey was caught behind off Mills overseas player Imran Khalid.

It was frustrating for Undercliffe, who had hauled themselves back into the game after sliding to 88-7 in pursuit of Mills’ total of 132 thanks to Nawaz Sardar (32) and Tom Hudson (20no).

Mills had also made a bad start, losing their first three wickets for only nine runs, before Khalid led a revival with an innings of 58.

Zeeshan Qasim made the breakthrough for Mills, taking 5-36, but ultimately both sides had to settle for 11 points each.

Bradford & Bingley bounced back from their opening-day defeat at Farsley by defeating defending champions Pudsey Congs, two players dominating the eight-wicket success.

Long-serving paceman Richard McCarthy took 5-43 as Congs collapsed to 141. Then Sri Lankan batsman Naweed Ghany launched an onslaught on the Congs attack, leading his side to victory in only 25.2 overs with 101 not out, including seven sixes and ten fours.

Cleckheaton are still looking for their first win after being on the wrong end of a close finish against visitors Gomersal.

Opener Richard Gould (61) top-scored for Gomersal as they totalled 237-6 and although Cleckheaton made a brave effort to reach this challenging total they were all out three runs short on 234.
