Yorkshire snatched a 58-run defeat from the jaws of victory during an incredible third day against Nottinghamshire at Headingley today.

The defending champions turned the tables to consign the hosts to their second successive home LV= County Championship defeat.

Notts started the day 18 runs behind with only four second innings wickets left.

But seventh wicket duo Chris Read and Steven Mullaney shared 150 to boost their total to 337, setting Yorkshire 145 to win.

Andrew Gale’s men then crumbled to 86 all out in 30.3 overs, despite Jonny Bairstow’s unbeaten 50.

Luke Fletcher, Charlie Shreck and Paul Franks all took three wickets as Joe Root was the only other man to make it into double figures with the bat during the remarkable collapse on a docile pitch.

The tone was set for the day by a ragged bowling display before and just after lunch.

Read and Mullaney capitalised superbly, moving the score on from the overnight 175-6 at a steady pace. They gave their side all the momentum, even though leg-spinner Adil Rashid impressed as he snared three lbws.

There was a bizarre incident when Rich Pyrah looked as if he had caught Read at first slip off the bowling of Hannon-Dalby. But, with the batsman on his way back to the pavilion, he had dropped it.

He then relayed the ball to Adam Lyth, who broke the stumps whilst Read was stranded out of his ground having realised what had happened.

Umpires Peter Willey and Steve Garratt said they would have given Read not out, but captain Andrew Gale sportingly took the decision out of their hands and called his opposite number back to the crease.

Read added 20 runs to his tally, and it looked like it could cost Yorkshire (six points). But the margin of defeat ended up being far greater.

England bowler Ajmal Shahzad will return from his hamstring injury in tomorrow’s Clydesdale Bank 40 opener against the Netherlands at Headingley (1.45pm).
