Yorkshire claimed the initiative during a fascinating day against defending champions Nottinghamshire at Headingley yesterday.

A total of 15 wickets fell on the opening day of the Tykes’ third LV= County Championship match of the season, with the hosts closing on 213-5 from 58 overs after bowling Notts out for just 143 inside 36.

Rich Pyrah and former Trent Bridge star Ryan Sidebottom shared nine wickets, taking advantage of prodigious swing after visiting captain Chris Read had elected to bat at the toss.

Adam Lyth, Anthony McGrath, captain Andrew Gale (47 not out) and Adil Rashid (39no) then all made vital contributions with the bat for Yorkshire as they head into the second day with a lead of 70.

Notts, whose top scorer was Alex Hales with 85, failed to recover from being reduced to 7-3 in the fifth over of the morning.

Sidebottom removed Paul Franks and Samit Patel in two balls on the way to figures of 4-30 from 12 overs.

Pyrah recorded a maiden five-wicket haul, with his 5-58 from 10.4 overs bettering the career-best three-wicket bag he took against Durham last week.

Lyth held two superb catches in the slip cordon, while McGrath – he later made 49 runs – also pouched a beauty.

But the left-handed opener later let himself down after reaching 64 because he pulled Luke Fletcher down the throat of Franks at long-leg after being tested out numerous times with the short ball.

Lyth and McGrath shared 100 for the second wicket inside 27 overs, while Gale and Rashid will hope to add to their unbroken 69 for the sixth wicket when play resumes.

Fletcher was the pick of the visitors’ attack with 3-55 from 13 overs.
