Joe Root has made an encouraging start to life as a Yorkshire opener in LV= County Championship cricket against Durham at Headingley today.
The 20-year-old, who is 35 not out at lunch on day two, has played a couple of eye-catching strokes as the hosts have reached 93-2 from 26 overs in reply to Durham’s 327 all out.
After Ryan Sidebottom had taken his fourth wicket with the eighth ball of the day - that of Graham Onions - Yorkshire made a poor start with the willow.
Adam Lyth pulled England man Onions, playing his first game for 15 months, to Ben Stokes at mid-wicket for a two-ball duck.
Anthony McGrath was then trapped lbw as he tried to leave a ball from Callum Thorp to make the score at 43-2 in the tenth over.
Root and captain Andrew Gale (15 not out) have since shared an unbroken third-wicket stand of 50.
