A total of between £20,000 and £25,000 was raised by a memorial charity cricket match at Undercliffe yesterday.
The game was between a Pakistan All Star XI and an International All Star XI, and was played to celebrate the lives of Mohammed Hafiz, Yasir Najeeb and Tauseef Bashir.
“The response was fantastic – we only expected to raise between £15,000 and £18,000,” said organiser Tariq Hussain.
“We charged £50, £100 or £200 for adverts in the programme and people have been so generous.”
The money raised will go to the Umeed Welfare Trust and selected other charities.
Star attractions at the match, which attracted over 800 spectators, were the presentation party of Pakistani coaches, former pace bowler Waqar Younis, former Idle all-rounder Ijaz Ahmed and Aquib Javed.
The Pakistan All Star XI won by 40 runs, despite Wakefield St Michaels’ Aussie Jacob Thorne making 74 for the International All Star XI.
