Sarfraz Ahmed hammered an unbeaten 65 as the Mela Pakistan XI snatched a thrilling one-wicket win over the Mela Australia XI in the Yorkshire Cricket Mela Challenge match at Manningham Mills on Sunday.

The Woodlands all-rounder smashed eight sixes and two fours as the Mela Pakistan XI recovered from 174-8 to overhaul the Australians’ score of 239-9 with five balls to spare in the 40-overs-a-side contest.

After slumping to 14-2, the Mela Pakistan XI recovered through 47 from Farakh Hussain (Undercliffe) and 43 by Adil Islam (Baildon) but still needed Sarfraz’s heroics for victory.

One man who did not deserve to be a loser was Jacob Thorne. He dominated his side’s innings with a superb 102, which contained three sixes and 13 fours.

He made his century off 92 balls and shared in two crucial partnerships, putting on 70 for the third wicket with Luke Waters (39) and 110 for the fourth wicket alongside Michael Warne (20). Azharullah was the pick of the Mela Pakistan XI bowlers, taking 6-32.
