Clint McKay’s displays for the county will not have Andrew Gale, Stewart Regan and Martyn Moxon scrambling to secure his signature for next season.

The 27-year-old Australian bowler has failed to build on a four-wicket debut against Derbyshire at Headingley last month, only claiming another four wickets in five more matches.

He has been hamstrung by an expensive economy rate of 9.37 runs per over.

McKay said: “I’ve had a fantastic time here, and the boys are a fantastic bunch of people.

“But my performances have been a bit indifferent. I’ve had some good displays, but some pretty awful ones too.”

Gale has also expressed his pleasure at David Wainwright’s return to first team action last week.

The left-arm spinner has suffered a nightmare first half of the season through loss of form and injury.

It has been a quite remarkable fall from grace for the 25-year-old, being as he played for the England Lions in February on their tour of the United Arab Emirates.

But Gale is hopeful that the player can still have a big say in the county’s pursuit of silverware in the second half of the season.

He said: “It’s been a bit of a tough year for Wainers. We know that he lacked consistency at the start of the season, but when he started to bowl better he got this knee injury which has dogged him.

“But we are coming to the business end of the season now, and all the spinners will hopefully play a major part.”
