Tino Best is hoping a spell as Yorkshire’s overseas player can rekindle his international career with the West Indies.

But the bubbly Bajan bowler, who has English grandparents, is not ruling out turning his back on the Caribbean and taking up status as a Kolpak player.

Following a turbulent few days for Tykes director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon, there was some cheer as Best took to the field at the 3 Ws Oval in Barbados as he embarked upon a two-day trial.

Moxon learnt of Daryl Tuffey’s broken hand on Tuesday but moved quickly to name Best in his team to face Lancashire with a view to signing him as cover for Ryan Harris.

Due to visa and work permit issues, a decision needs to be made on Best or any other target before the White Rose squad leave for home tomorrow evening.

But Best is the favourite for the role as he is currently with the squad and available for as long as the club need him.

He said: “I am retained on a West Indies board contract but once you get a professional contract you can go. It’s all about getting that opportunity to play cricket and not just being at home chillin’.

“To play in England would be a beautiful opportunity because they play so much cricket. My grandparents are from England, so I’ve always wanted to play there.”

Speedster Best, who has just finished a successful domestic campaign with Barbados, asked to train with Yorkshire on Thursday.

Having English relations could open the door for him to qualify as a local in county cricket if he impressed, as could the fact that he played international cricket as recently as last July.

“If the opportunity arose for me to turn into a Kolpak, then I would have to think long and hard about it,” he said.

“But if I am going to come as a replacement for someone who is injured, I would be an overseas.

“That would perhaps be better for me because the West Indies selectors would see me playing cricket, then hopefully try to get me back into the set-up.”

Best is known for his energetic brand of cricket, very similar to that of Ajmal Shahzad. He loves to bowl quick and whack it as far as he can when batting. Just ask Andrew Flintoff!

He said: “We don’t play a lot of cricket here, so my body hasn’t been going through a lot of wear and tear. I have only played 44 first-class games for Barbados and 70 overall in nine seasons.

“I’m 28, my body’s still strong and fit and I’m still bowling quick. I just need that opportunity to showcase my talent.

“There were two counties that I always wanted to play for when I was young. They were Yorkshire and Surrey.

“My favourite bowler is Darren Gough. When I first played against England back in 2004, it was terrific meeting the Dazzler. To play for Yorkshire would be a dream come true.”
