Bradfordians Adil Rashid and Anthony McGrath both continued their fine form in the longer version of the game with half-centuries against Lancashire in Barbados.

Former Yorkshire captain McGrath, who notched 72 against Derbyshire at the 3 Ws Oval last week, hit five fours in a patient 62 off 199 balls.

And Rashid, having cracked 67 in the aforementioned game, hit seven fours in 66 not out off 117.

But Lancashire had the better of the day because they restricted the score to 226 for nine from 94 overs, left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan taking six for 71 in 28 overs.

“To see Anthony spend some time at the crease is heartening,” said opener Joe Sayers, who he had earlier shared a second-wicket stand of 58 with in 34 overs after Andrew Gale had won the toss and elected to bat first.

Some disciplined Lancashire bowling on a slow pitch had meant that run scoring was difficult for the white rose county, with Sayers notching 26 off 104 balls and McGrath only reaching his half-century off 158.

Sayers said: “It was quite tricky in the morning. The pitch started damp and there hasn’t been any pace or carry. It was an exercise in patience.”

Adam Lyth edged Kyle Hogg behind to Gareth Cross in just the second over of the day, before Sayers and McGrath carried their side through to lunch.

But the left-handed opener was the first of three wickets to fall in the space of 20 overs to leave the score at 118 for four in the 55th, falling lbw to Sajid Mahmood.

But Kerrigan took the next two in successive overs, snapping up Gale courtesy of a superb reflex catch by wicketkeeper Cross after the ball had rebounded off the chest of Paul Horton at slip. He then bowled Jonny Bairstow.

McGrath was the fifth man out when he edged Tom Smith behind to Luke Sutton, Lancashire’s second keeper of the day.

Kerrigan then trapped Lee Hodgson and Azeem Rafiq lbw before having James Lee caught at slip and bowling Oliver Hannon-Dalby within the space of three balls.

Pace bowler Tino Best will get the chance to impress with the ball for Yorkshire tomorrow.
