Former West Indies pace bowler Tino Best could be Yorkshire’s new overseas player.

Martyn Moxon, the White Rose county’s director of professional cricket, has spoken of his frustration at the news of Daryl Tuffey’s broken hand earlier this week.

But the ex-opening batsman has moved quickly to add Best, the Barbados quickie, to his team for tomorrow’s two-day friendly against Lancashire in Barbados.

Moxon said: “It’s been a struggle all winter with the overseas situation. It’s really disappointing when you think you’ve got it sorted, then something like this happens at the last minute.

“We’re going to play Tino this weekend. We’re going to have a look at him, but we’ve got one or possibly two options from elsewhere in the world.

“He’s had a good season for Barbados. Speaking to some people over here, he sounds like he is bowling very well, but I think we’ve got to make a decision this weekend due to work permits.”

New Zealand’s Tuffey broke his left hand whilst playing in the first Test against Australia earlier this week, taking a blow from fast bowler Mitchell Johnson. He was due to cover the absence of Ryan Harris at Headingley.

Best, 28, has 14 Tests and 12 one-day internationals under his belt. His last Test was against Bangladesh back in July, but he only played due to a strike by more experienced players.

He said: “I’ve always wanted to play county cricket. I’ve had a very good season for Barbados, and I’m still probably one of the quickest bowlers in the Caribbean.

“I got two five-fors in five games for Barbados, and I’m looking forward to the chance to earn a contract to play in England.”
