David Wainwright’s passport must have more stamps than Postman Pat after a winter of globe-trekking with two England squads.

The left-arm spinner travelled to South Africa for five weeks with the ECB Performance Programme squad prior to Christmas, before spending three weeks in the United Arab Emirates with the England Lions squad after the festive period.

But his suitcase will not be gathering dust just yet because he has the potential of two trips to the Caribbean in the next two months.

He flies out to Barbados with Yorkshire for their pre-season tour on Sunday and will hope to return there at the end of April with the full England squad for their World Twenty20 campaign.

Despite only having 15 Twenty20 career matches under his belt, Wainwright has been named by national selector Geoff Miller in a provisional 30-man squad for the third edition of the 20-over international jamboree.

“I’ve never been to Barbados before and if I do get picked (for England) I’ll have already played in those conditions,” said Wainwright, who celebrates his 25th birthday while on tour with Yorkshire.

“Every man in that squad will be hoping they get selected and I’m no different. But if not, I’ll be looking forward to the season with Yorkshire.

“If I don’t get in it’s not a bad thing because I know that I’m in the selectors’ thoughts.”

With the fact that Yorkshire have pitted their wits against other counties on the last two pre-season tours, and will do so again in Barbados, trips abroad seem to be gaining far more importance for the players.

Wainwright said: “It’s always important. It was Abu Dhabi last year, now it’s Barbados. We need to get off to a good start and try and carry that on through the rest of the season.”

Wainwright has turned himself into an invaluable member of the White Rose county’s limited-overs sides but has yet to cement his place in their County Championship line-up.

Since making his first-class debut in 2004, he has only played 24 matches in the longer format of the game.

He said: “That was my priority at the end of last season and it’s not changed. I want to play more Championship cricket.”
