Bradford Mutual Sunday School League club Yorkshire LPS have won a national eight-a-side cricket competition for the Patel community.

They topped their group with four wins from four matches before defeating Wellingborough in the semi-finals and hosts Leicester in the final.

A total of 40 teams from as far afield as London entered, with six pitches being used at once at one stage to get the seven-overs-per-side contests played.

LPS secretary Ishy Patel said: “Everyone had to bowl an over, apart from the wicketkeeper, and batsmen had to retire when they had made 25 but could come back later in the innings if needed.”

Mukesh Patel and Mahesh Patel were among the leading lights in the victorious team – who have also won the Mutual Sunday School League championship, known as Group A.

Mukesh was named player of the tournament as skipper Pradip Patel led his side to the title. Other players in the squad were Mehul Patel, Dilesh Patel and Narendra Patel, plus guests Peyush Patel and Ankit Patel.

LPS, who play their home matches at Woodhall Park in Thornbury, also entered two other teams in the Leicester event, including a side made up of teenagers, but neither of these made it past the group stage.

The Bradford-based club hope to defend their title next year, although the tournament is not necessarily held annually.

LPS also won the football version of the competition in 1994.
