Yorkshire opening batsman Craig White has had an extra year added to his contract which will keep him at the club at least until the end of the 2008 season, while wicketkeeper-batsman Gerard Brophy has signed a new two-year deal.

White, who stood down from the captaincy at the end of last season after three years in charge, agreed his year's extension with chairman Colin Graves shortly before the start of the present campaign but details have just been released.

Although the former England all-rounder will be 39 in December, Yorkshire still believe he has a valuable role to play and they want to go on making use of his experience.

From next summer, counties will be able to sign only one overseas player and Yorkshire feel that White may need to be as closely involved as ever.

"I am delighted to be staying at Yorkshire for another year," said Scarborough-based White.

"I am proud that the club have honoured my services with a new deal. As for the future, I will play it by ear and see how it goes.

"At the moment I am just really pleased with the direction the club is going in and I am happy to be part of it."

White has done a reasonable job in the Championship so far this season, hitting a century in the opening match against Surrey at The Oval and going on to make 430 runs at an average of 30.71.

His run tally would undoubtedly have been higher had he not made way in a couple of matches for England captain Michael Vaughan and he may be called upon to do so again before the season is out.

White emerged as Yorkshire's leading run-scorer in the Twenty20 Cup and is still an excellent fielder in the covers and mid-wicket areas.

Brophy had a lean time of it last year after being signed from Northamptonshire but he has been in splendid form with the bat this season both in the Championship and in one-day cricket, where he has gone in high up the order.

"It has been good to be involved in the club's success this season and hopefully I can be part of a team that goes from strength to strength over the years," said Brophy.

There was disappointment yesterday for Yorkshire all-rounder Tim Bresnan, who has not made it into England's final squad of 15 for the ICC World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa next month.

Bresnan was in the initial list of 30 but in the end England have shown a preference for other young fast bowlers like Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett.

Neither the 14-man England squad for the first four NatWest Series matches with India nor the Twenty20 squad contain any Yorkshire players.
