Laisterdyke proved to be real party-poopers in the Waddilove Trophy Final on Sunday when they upset holders Girlington - who were seeking their third successive triumph at their "lucky" venue of Hepworth & Idle.

Despite being the underdogs in terms of league standings, Laisterdyke thoroughly deserved their success.

After electing to bat, opener Majid Khan was soon dominating the Laisterdyke scoring, to such a degree that when he was finally caught by Abid Hussain off the bowling of Mussawar Shah, he had made 91 out of the Laisterdyke score of 131 for four after 25 overs.

Ashfaq Khan (62) and Jamil Ahmed (29) then added 104 in what proved to be a match-winning partnership to take the game away from the holders, and despite losing their last six wickets for the addition of only 23 runs - with both Shah (4-55) and skipper Mohammed Azaad (3-29) proving difficult to score off - a final total of 258 was always going to be a challenge.

The start that Girlington wanted never materialised, as superb bowling by Shaaid Nazim and in particular Iqtegar Aftab left them reeling at 11 for three.

Aftab teamed up with wicketkeeper Naeem Ul Haq to remove the dangerous trio of Manzar Naqvi, Mahmood Farooqui and Sajed Parvez, all in the space of his opening two overs.

So much were the Laisterdyke bowlers in control that Girlington had used up 20 of their 45 overs to reach just 23 for the loss of five wickets.

Mussawar Shah was promoted up the order to try and add some impetus and, along with skipper Azaad, added 77 in circumspect fashion for the sixth wicket before Azaad was adjudged lbw falling to Tahir Khan for 29.

The run-rate increased to around 12 an over and despite more lusty blows from Shah wickets fell around him.

The final wicket fell at 164 when Shah (75) attempted another big hit, the ball ending up in the safe hands of Zahir Abbas off the bowling of Nazim, and with it the dreams of three successive cup final wins came to an end.

There was some consolation for Girlington when Shah was named man of the match for his all round performance of four for 55 with the ball and 75 with the bat.
