Pudsey St Lawrence may have won four of their opening five matches but they aren't getting carried away with their start to the JCT600 Bradford League campaign.
"We are just taking each game as it comes and we'll see where we are at the end of the season," said Saints' opening batsman Mark Robertshaw.
Victories over Idle, Bowling Old Lane, Bradford & Bingley and Cleckheaton, and a defeat at Manningham Mills, have left Pudsey St Lawrence in third place on 68 points, 19 points behind leaders East Bierley and five adrift of defending champions Woodlands.
The good thing is that Saints seem to be firing in both the batting and bowling departments.
Overseas player Tom Stray already has two scores in the seventies - 77 against Idle and 79 not out against Bingley - and he has been joined near those marks by Alex Stead (72 against Idle) and Robertshaw (71 against Bingley).
However, the player of the season so far for St Lawrence has undoubtedly been all-rounder James Smith, who has plundered an unbeaten 109 against Bowling Old Lane and already has 14 league wickets.
Helping him on the bowling front has been Gareth Clough and skipper Andrew Doidge, whose off-spin has garnered figures of four for 49, including a first-day hat-trick, against Idle and five for 32 against Bingley.
Robertshaw, who missed the victory over Idle as he was playing for Bradford-Leeds UCCE against Gloucestershire, said: "It is early days but things are going well.
"Aussie Tom Stray looks a quality batsman and James is one of the leading players in the league.
"But we are a young side and have included 15-year-old left-arm spinner Adam Hopkins and 16-year-old all-rounder Kashif Maroof."
As for their only setback, Robertshaw said: "Mills' wicket, because of its slope, was playing two-paced, and we also suffered a couple of bad umpiring decisions - in general everything went against us."
This weekend Saints have two derbies - they are at second-from-bottom Farsley on Saturday and and at home to fifth-placed Pudsey Congs on Monday.
Robertshaw said: "Farsley may be 40 points behind us but they gave us two close games last season, which we just won, and Congs are always a very strong side and must never be written off."
