ON A day when approaching 300 runs was the norm, Pudsey Congs hit the jackpot in sailing through to the quarter-finals of the Solly Sports Heavy Woollen Cup.

Manipulating the ball around the Bennett Lane ground with relative ease, they rattled up 344-3 against Hanging Heaton before restricting their hosts to 189, wicketkeeper Joe Suggitt not batting due to a hairline fracture of a finger sustained before tea when he had the gloves on.

"It was pretty much a complete performance," said Glenn Roberts, who made his seasonal debut for Congs after concentrating on umpiring.

"I got the call-up as we were a bit short – in fact, we must have been more than a bit short in batting as I opened the innings!

"We played well with us batting around Nick Lindley, while our young seamers bowled well.

"Josh Holling is at Cardiff MCCU and has also played for Yorkshire Under-19s – and when Mustafa Rafique got it right, he looked good too."

Congs were able to establish four partnerships with Lindley, who batted through for 115.

Lindley hit nine fours and three sixes but the real impetus came from skipper Gareth Phillips (75 off 99 balls, including two sixes and nine fours) and particularly Callum Geldart (64 off 26 balls, with six sixes and nine fours).

Geldart reverse swept two successive fours off Ian Philliskirk to start the 44th over and then reverse swept him for six to reach his 50 before Gary Fellows trapped him lbw playing the same shot.

Congs' early tactics with ball in hand seemed to centre around putting the opposition in Dewsbury and District Hospital, with Fellows felled by a James Pearson delivery that hit him just above the waist, while Nick Connolly was struck in the box by a nip-backer.

Both batsmen were able to continue but, knowing they had to go for it from the off, Hanging Heaton wickets fell at regular intervals after Fellows was caught at deep cover off a skier when the score was 47.

Off-spinner Kez Ahmed helped to wrap the innings up by taking 4-33 after Holling (2-23) and Rafique (2-29) had put Congs in charge.

They now visit Gomersal in the quarter-finals, with the latter side emerging from a high-scoring thriller.

Gomersal made 289-7, Jack Seddon (111) and Jonathan Boynton (74) leading the way after skipper Graham Hilton had made 37.

James Russell’s 4-47 was crucial as visitors Delph & Dobcross replied with 286.

New Farnley are also through to the last eight after spinners David McCallum (5-31) and Mark Lawson (3-26) were instrumental in dismissing Skelmanthorpe for 129 after the home side had scored 192-9, Qasim Khan making 40 and Tom Suggitt 33.

Woodlands are already through to the semi-finals after defeating Wakefield Thornes by 66 runs at Albert Terrace.

But the hosts were 94-5 in the 28th over before Chris Brice (58 off 51 balls), Pieter Swanepoel (22no), Elliot Richardson (22) and Jordan Laban (19) boosted them to 241-9.

Swanepoel (4-44) and Richardson (3-37) then did well with the ball as Thornes were dismissed for 175.
