HORSFORTH entertain Ben Rhydding tomorrow in a situation that few would have anticipated a year ago.

True, at this stage last season Horsforth had just taken over top spot in Division Three of the Aire-Wharfe League and, after strengthening their squad massively, were hot favourites to win promotion.

But Ben Rhydding were two divisions higher and celebrating a good win over Burley that moved them up to mid-table.

Horsforth went on to take their crown and, with more astute signings – especially Gareth Lee from Menston, who already has three centuries under his belt – are mounting another promotion challenge.

In contrast, Ben Rhydding suffered relegation and are still looking for their first win in Division Two, only being kept off bottom spot because Green Lane had all their early points taken away for fielding an ineligible player.

It would seem to be a nailed-on win for Horsforth but might depend on how much their confidence was rocked last week when Colton skittled them for 96.

Having been stripped of 74 points, Green Lane's focus has switched from a promotion challenge to getting out of the bottom two – but they remain a strong side and should be too good for Adel.

Lane's plight moved Thackley out of the bottom two but they are still struggling – their one victory was over Ben Rhydding – and they will not find it easy against Harden, who are looking for a third successive win.

Tong Park Esholts's visit to Skipton is intriguing because neither side has found consistent form so far.

In Division One, Otley will expect to bolster their title chase at Ilkley, who are already in danger of being cut adrift at the bottom along with Guiseley.

Victory could see Otley take over top spot if unbeaten Rawdon can overcome leaders Beckwithshaw, who showed their first signs of vulnerability in losing to Collingham last week.

Guiseley, who already find themselves 32 points short of the safety zone, entertain Burley, who are seeking to end a five-match losing streak.

With Division Three leaders New Rover facing a tricky trip to Old Modernians, nearest rivals Addingham and Olicanian will look to cash in at Alwoodley and Bardsey respectively.

Bolton Villas have climbed to fourth and should consolidate that at Upper Wharfedale – but the erratic form of Calverley and Hall Park means the result of their meeting will depend on who turns up on the day.

Silsden will make another attempt at breaking their duck but will not find it easy against Menston, who are looking for a third consecutive win.

* Pick of the second-round ties in the Waddilove Cup on Sunday is undoubtedly Burley's visit to Beckwithshaw.

Burley have won the trophy nine times, three of those in the last five years, and even though league form might suggest otherwise, it would be a brave man who bet against them going through.

Only Otley have a better cup record with 11 wins and they should be too strong for Adel, while Ben Rhydding – who only find themselves in the draw after Alwoodley were kicked out for fielding an ineligible player – have a tricky match against Olicanian.

Second-round draw: Addingham v Horsforth, Beckwithshaw v Burley, Ben Rhydding v Olicanian, Bilton v North Leeds, Calverley v Thackley, Collingham v Follifoot, Old Modernians v Ilkley, Otley v Adel.
