SAM Billings is the only uncapped player in England's one-day squad to face New Zealand in the Royal London Series, which also includes Yorkshire trio Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid and Joe Root.

Kent batsman Billings is included among a clutch of emerging cricketers – with seamer Mark Wood, batsman Jason Roy and all-rounder David Willey having played just once for their country in ODIs, last month's rain-ruined match against Ireland in Dublin.

The first 50-over squad England have picked from full-strength availability since their embarrassingly unsuccessful World Cup campaign last winter is also notable for the omissions of several players who took part in that global tournament.

But national selector James Whitaker stressed that pace bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad, as well as batsmen Gary Ballance and Ian Bell, are by no means permanently out of the equation in ODI cricket.

All-rounder Moeen Ali is also being rested for the five limited-overs matches against the Kiwis, starting in Birmingham next Tuesday.

But seven of those who were in the squad to face subsequent World Cup finalists New Zealand in the last meeting between the countries, a landslide home win in Wellington, are retained by England under the captaincy of Eoin Morgan.

The selection of Plunkett, Rashid and Root means they will be unavailable for Yorkshire's next County Championship match against Middlesex, which starts at Headingley on Sunday.

Whitaker said: "This series presents an excellent opportunity to look at players we believe can play a key role for England over the next four years as we build towards the next ICC Cricket World Cup."

He explained that Moeen, expected to be England's frontline spinner in this summer's Ashes, will play for Worcestershire in preparation for that headline series.

Against New Zealand, the England selectors have opted for Yorkshire leg-spinner Rashid instead – with his county colleague Root also able to bowl off-breaks as well as bat in the middle order.
