ARCTIC has been the most used description of the weather for the Foster's Halifax League's Parish Cup second-round tie between Queensbury and Bridgeholme.

The players did have one drinks interval per innings – but in both they went off the field for a mug of hot tea.

Alan Ford, who umpired the match with Andrew Mitchell, said: "Arctic is the right word.

"With the wind-chill factor, they were the coldest conditions I have ever known – as a player or official – and it was Andrew's idea to take us off the field for a welcome mug of tea.

"It was so windy that you were virtually being blown off your feet and I reckon if it hadn't been a cup tie, it would not have been played.

"Not even heavy-duty bails were any good, so we played without bails at all."

As for the match itself, Girdev Singh was the key figure as Premier Division strugglers Queensbury beat Division One leaders Bridgeholme by 41 runs.

Singh made an unbeaten 47 to back up efforts by Jason Slator (41), Scott Osborne (36), Azhar Shakir (28) and Amjad Ali (24) as the hosts made 218.

All-rounder Singh then took 5-25 and Shakir supported him with 2-23 as Bridgeholme were dismissed for 177.

Division Two side Great Horton Park Chapel rattled up 290-7 at Luddendenfoot, which was enough to see off their Division One hosts as they could only make 214.

Division One outfit Sowerby St Peters won by five wickets in their derby against Premier Division hosts SBCI, making 139-5 in reply to the top-flight club's 135.

Meanwhile, there was no repeat of the first-round heroics from Bradshaw and Shelf.

Bradshaw had knocked out holders Copley but they were no match for league champions and last year's beaten finalists Jer Lane. Dean Cotton's side were bowled out for 111 and lost by nine wickets.

Shelf, who had beaten Blackley from two divisions higher in round one, were unable to add the scalp of Premier Division opponents Sowerby Bridge. The visitors won by 105 runs (257-6 v 152).

In the second round of the Crossley Shield for second teams, Queensbury made 124-5 after home side Low Moor could only make 122, while Oxenhope (199-6) successfully chased down visitors Luddendenfoot's 198-8.
