THEY used their permanent floodlights for the first time at the Emirates ICG but by the end of the evening it was Yorkshire Vikings who were in the dark as they lost to Durham Jets by six runs in their NatWest T20 Blast match.
Needing 183 to win, Yorkshire were indebted to Andrew Gale (41) and to Tim Bresnan – whose unbeaten 30 included a couple of mighty sixes – but they fell foul of Keaton Jennings, who took a career-best 4-37 for the home side.
Yorkshire's innings had got off to a bad start with both Andrew Hodd and Alex Lees falling for single figures inside the first four overs.
Jonny Bairstow made 27 in a 50-run stand with Gale but none of Yorkshire's batsmen were able to play the major innings which the situation required.
Glenn Maxwell made only eight and 72 runs were needed off the last six overs with only four wickets in hand.
Bresnan and Liam Plunket (17) did their best but the challenge was just beyond them as Mark Stoneman's bowlers turned the screw.
Durham openers Stoneman and Phil Mustard had earlier put on 30 in 3.2 overs before Stoneman was pouched at slip by Alex Lees off Plunkett for 20.
Calum MacLeod was then caught by Bresnan off Adil Rashid for eight and after ten overs, Durham were 74-2.
Two balls later, Mustard was well taken by Rashid at long on off Maxwell for a 34-ball 39.
Durham were then 106-3 after 15 overs before 30 runs were taken off 12 balls bowled by Maxwell and Plunkett as Paul Collingwood cashed in before being bowled by former colleague Plunkett for 31.
That was only the prelude to an onslaught led by John Hastings, who whacked two fours off Plunkett in a 16-ball innings of 37 which included five fours and two sixes.
He clubbed 18 runs off Bresnan's final four balls of the innings and 76 were scored off the final five overs. Plunkett, with 2-30, emerged as the most successful Yorkshire bowler.
