YORKSHIRE continued their push for victory in their County Championship clash with Hampshire as they set about imposing a formidable fourth-innings target on their visitors.
Jack Brooks and Adil Rashid took the two wickets required to wrap up the Hampshire first innings inside the first 15 balls of the morning as the Tykes secured a 143-run first innings lead.
Brooks had Lewis McManus lbw for ten with his fifth delivery of the day before James Tomlinson was leg before to Rashid, who finished with figures of 4-70 on his return to county action.
Adam Lyth wasted no time in getting Yorkshire’s second innings under way as he took ten off Tomlinson’s first over, but after he was struck on the helmet during a barrage of short balls by Fidel Edwards, he flashed at a wide one from the West Indies paceman and edged behind for 23.
Alex Lees fell soon after for 16, leaving Che Pujara and Andrew Gale to navigate Yorkshire through to lunch on 71-2, a lead of 214.
Meanwhile, new ECB Director of Cricket Andrew Strauss confirmed Yorkshire head coach Jason Gillespie is a candidate to replace Peter Moores as head coach of England.
Speaking at Lord’s, the former England captain said: “Jason Gillespie is one of the candidates, absolutely. We will approach candidates in the next few days.”
He also confirmed Yorkshire batsman Joe Root as the new Test vice-captain for the upcoming series against New Zealand and Australia.
