CLECKHEATON, champions of the JCT600 Bradford League, made an early exit from this season's Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions' Trophy.

In a low-scoring encounter at York Senior League winners Woodhouse Grange, the Moorenders fell by one wicket in a match that was full of twists and turns.

The Davidstow National Village champions secured victory when Tom Young hit Cleckheaton spinner Andrew Deegan for two successive sixes.

Yet such an exciting finish had seemed extremely unlikely when Cleckheaton were 27-5 after electing to bat.

Curtis Free (30) and Mal Nicholson (28) were the main contributors to the visitors' disappointing 126, Grange skipper Steve Burdett being the pick of the bowlers with 4-31.

Cleckheaton's bowlers did their best to try and rescue the game and leg-spinner Tanzeel Altaf was particularly effective with 4-27, while Ian Wood finished his ten overs with economical figures of 1-15.

It looked as if Cleckheaton had pulled the game out of the fire when Grange were reduced to 98-8 – but they could not dislodge match-winner Young, whose four sixes and three fours punctuated a 58-ball innings of 55.

In another first-round tie, Aire-Wharfe league champions Otley were rolled over for just 35 by South Yorkshire League winners Treeton, who had earlier made 144.
