WILL Rhodes says he should have scored a century during his three-match spell as Yorkshire’s replacement opener for Adam Lyth.
The White Rose all-rounder stood in for Lyth during the opening stages of the LV= County Championship season whilst his fellow left-hander was away with England in the Caribbean.
Rhodes admits to being satisfied with his contribution of 161 runs from five innings, including a top score of 46 in last week’s draw against Warwickshire.
But the 20-year-old could not hide his frustration at not making the most of a quartet of starts.
"I got a 40 not out at Worcester and a couple of forties since,” said Rhodes, who also scored 29 in the second innings last week.
“It would have been nice, though, to go on and get to a fifty. I should have really got a hundred in my own opinion, but I'm generally pleased with how I've gone early season.
"I played a poor shot first innings at Worcester, but the way I played second innings was really positive.”
Rhodes has played all five of Yorkshire’s first-class matches this summer, including the champion county fixture against the MCC when he hit 61 from the middle order and took three cheap wickets.
But he is far from sure of his place for this weekend’s fourth Championship match against Hampshire at Headingley because England squad players Lyth, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid are all available.
“Team selection is up to Jason Gillespie and Martyn Moxon, but all I can do is put my name in the hat. Hopefully I've done that,” added Rhodes.
"If I'm not selected, I'll go back to the twos and score a stack full of runs and work my way back in that way.”
If Rhodes was to miss the Hampshire game, he is likely to return for their trip to Somerset later this month with Lyth almost certain to make his Test debut against New Zealand.
