JACK Leaning started Yorkshire's pre-season tour of the United Arab Emirates with a bang as he hit an unbeaten double century during the opening day of a two-day intra-squad match in Abu Dhabi.
The 21-year-old right-hander, fresh from a winter of grade cricket in Australia, underpinned a Team Alex Lees score of 419-8 from 90 overs against Team Adam Lyth, closing on 207 not out to add to a brisk 91 from opener Lees.
Leaning, who reached 200 off 250 balls with 29 fours, had to combat a bowling attack including Ryan Sidebottom, Jack Brooks, Rich Pyrah, Karl Carver, Moin Ashraf and Will Rhodes. Teenage fast bowler Matthew Fisher also hit a useful 42 down the order.
Team Lyth will bat for 90 overs in reply. Andrew Gale, who did not field, is due to bat. The Yorkshire captain is carrying a minor hamstring injury.
