Jason Gillespie has urged Yorkshire to improve their performances if they have genuine ambitions of shrugging off last season’s title disappointment to win the LV= County Championship this summer.
Yorkshire’s first-team coach has praised their performances all season, most notably their innings victory over Warwickshire at Headingley a fortnight ago, but believes they were under-par in the Roses match, which finished as a draw after rain washed out the final day.
“Absolutely no question (we need to improve),” said Gillespie. “We want to focus on a process and we just didn’t quite get it right.
"We did some pretty good things in this game, no question, but we have to be honest with ourselves – we just weren’t quite as disciplined as we have been.
“We’ve won a couple of games this season when we’ve been incredibly disciplined. I thought our batting at Durham was incredible.
"On a difficult pitch, we were very disciplined, and we didn’t do that here and we know we need to be better if we’re going to win games of cricket.”
Gillespie stressed: “Overall we weren’t quite on it in the field and we speak about being ruthless with the bat and we gifted a few wickets with a bit of carelessness.
“There’s a bit to work on, and to be fair to them they’ve been working incredibly hard and it just didn’t click in this game.
"Lancashire played some good cricket, but I thought we allowed them to play good cricket at times, but it’s something to learn from and make sure we’re better next time.”
Yorkshire will travel to Northampton this weekend for their next championship outing without Ryan Sidebottom, who suffered a left hamstring strain during the Roses match, although he is not expected to be out for very long.
Sidebottom will travel with the squad to Northampton to receive treatment, while Yorkshire will also be without Kane Williamson, who departs for New Zealand’s tour to the West Indies today.
He will miss eight NatWest T20 Blast matches and five championship matches before returning in July, and will be replaced by Australian Aaron Finch, who is due to make his debut in Friday’s T20 game against Derbyshire at Headingley.
