If every dog has its day, it was a day to forget for the underdog in the first round of the All Rounder Cricket Equipment's Central Yorkshire League's Jack Hampshire Trophy, where Scholes' defeat at Buttershaw St Paul's was the one major upset of the round.
Having completed a six-wicket win at champions Townville the day before, Scholes went into this tie as Premier Division leaders.
With Mo Sharafat and Zain Abbas taking three wickets apiece, Scholes restricted the experienced Townville batting to 168-8 in that league game but they came unstuck when facing Buttershaw junior Kevin McDermott in the 'Jack Hampshire'.
Batting first, Championship side Buttershaw hit 211-3 in their 40 overs, with an unbeaten 113 from McDermott.
Scholes began well with 91 from opener Abbas but the next five batsmen mustered only 16 runs between them, and that proved the difference between the sides as the hosts won by 22 runs.
Elsewhere, things went largely to form with Westwood Park, from Division One, getting the backlash from Townville's defeat by Scholes.
Townville's Matthew Bremner (123) and Jack Hughes (145) shared an unbroken 236-run stand for the third wicket to leave Westwood for dead - the adjacent Gallows Hill an ominous portent.
Westwood made a spirited response, Sajid Khan top-scoring with 58 off 50 balls out of 166-8, but they were never really in contention.
Birstall (75-2) made short work of it at East Leeds (73), and Mirfield Parish Cavaliers lost by 72 runs at home to Methley in the only all-Premier Division tie.
In the Championship's top game, second-placed Liversedge struggled to reach 177-8 at leaders Batley, Alan Sumner (46) top-scoring, and Batley eased home by five wickets with the help of a century fourth-wicket stand by Fawad Maqsood (73) and Imran Mayat (65).
