Durham recovered from a sticky start to day three against Yorkshire by reaching lunch at 142-3 from 49 overs.
The hosts, resuming on 62-1 in reply to 589-8 declared, quickly slipped to 70-3 following the loss of Scott Borthwick and Sri Lankan overseas Kumar Sangakkara for two and nought respectively.
Tim Bresnan struck in the day’s fourth over when he had Borthwick lbw, leaving the score at 69-2 in the 23rd.
Ryan Sidebottom had Sangakkara caught at second slip by Adam Lyth in the next over after Kane Williamson had parried the ball his way from third slip.
Opener Mark Stoneman and Michael Richardson (35 not out) have since added an unbroken 72 in 25 overs for the fourth wicket.
