Former Yorkshire batsman Joe Sayers is determined to help new club Farsley into trophy-winning contention before leaving them in August for a new career in the city.

The 30-year-old opener has signed on at Red Lane, having retired from first-class cricket in January.

He is currently undertaking some coaching work with the Pro Coach Academy, run by Chris Taylor and Andrew Gale, but has a job lined up in London with the Citigroup for later this summer.

He expects his spell with the reigning JCT600 Bradford League Division Two champions to be his last act in the game, and he is hoping to go out with a bang.

Sayers previously played alongside his former county captain Gale at Cleckheaton in 2005, and has now moved from Hoylandswaine in the Huddersfield League.

“I’m going to play for Farsley for what I expect to be the last season of my career, certainly for some time anyway,” said Sayers.

“I’m playing with them until I leave in August to go to London. It’s Farsley’s 150th year, and I’m excited about helping them push for honours.

“I’ve got a few friends there, and I know it will be very competitive, hard-fought cricket. I had two years playing at Cleckheaton with Galey a few years back, so I’ve got that experience to draw upon.

“But I’m really looking forward to joining a new team and helping them towards success.”

Sayers, an England Lions player in 2009, hit 11 centuries and 28 fifties in his 108-match first-class career between 2002 and 2013.
