Yorkshire were undermined by a change in weather conditions that helped Nottinghamshire recover from an early setback to make a solid start in their County Championship game at Scarborough.
Having won the toss after a delayed start for a damp outfield, Yorkshire decided to bowl first in seamer-friendly conditions on a green-tinged wicket.
But by the time play finally began at 1.10pm – a shower further delayed the start – conditions had improved. And although Ryan Sidebottom tempted Alex Hales into edging behind driving at a wide delivery from the fifth ball of the day, Nottinghamshire recovered to reach 72-1 at tea.
Both Michael Lumb and Ed Cowan, who will soon join up with Australia’s Ashes squad, survived some tense moments against new-ball spells from Sidebottom and Steve Patterson.
Once the sun emerged, however, they had both played themselves in, with Lumb unbeaten on 34 while Cowan, who is yet to score a century for Nottinghamshire this summer, reaching 38.
