Yorkshire enjoyed an encouraging start to their LV= County Championship match against winless Somerset at Taunton, highlighted by Adam Lyth’s fluent 63 not out.

The visitors, whose captain Andrew Gale elected to bat first, navigated some early movement with the new ball to reach lunch on day two at a healthy 110-2.

Rain wiped out yesterday’s first day but Lyth was quickly into his stride despite the loss of Joe Sayers eight balls into the match, caught at second slip by Marcus Trescothick off Steve Kirby’s second ball to leave the score at 2-1.

He shared 80 for the second wicket with Phil Jaques (26) before the latter player edged Gemaal Hussain behind in the 20th over.

Lyth posted his fifty off 65 balls, including eight fours – the best of those a glorious cover drive off Craig Meschede.

He had offered a tough chance to South African overseas player Dean Elgar at third slip off Kirby on 37.

Lyth and Gale had put on 28 for the third wicket by the interval, with Gale unbeaten on 15.
