Teenager Kevin McDermott played a starring role as Buttershaw St Paul’s snatched a dramatic tie with a last-ball run-out in their Central Yorkshire League game at Wakefield St Michael’s.

McDermott got St Paul’s off to a decent start by making 31 out of 49 before being caught by Tom Robinson, with skipper Paul Carroll then adding an unbeaten 90 as his side reached 206-6.

St Michael’s made a steady chase in reply until, at 164-3 with 6.4 overs remaining, McDermott (3-28) picked up his first wicket.

He then ensured a stalemate when getting his revenge on Robinson by running him out as the Wakefield side went for the winning run off the last ball.

Also in Division One, Liversedge kept up with the leading clubs when they proved too strong for Ossett A.

But Sedge were unable to take maximum points as their opponents closed on 163-9 chasing a total of 221-9 that owed much to a 95-run stand for the second wicket between Alan Sumner (67) and Sean Wilson (46).

Nigel Doyle was the pick of the Liversedge attack with 3-57 in his 15 overs.

Promoted Mirfield, continuing their struggle at the foot of the table, survived just 95 balls in their derby fixture at home to Hopton Mills.

Chasing Mills’ total of 133, after Emma Bolt and Tamoor Saghir took five wickets apiece, Mirfield had only Saghir (13) in double figures as they crashed to just 26 all out.

This was largely due to Mick Carroll picking up an amazing 6-7 off eight overs.

Scholes (171) remain top of the division after a 71-run win over Methley A, Mohammed Sharafat taking 3-26.

In the Premier Division, Birstall continued their good early-season form with a win over Wakefield Thornes but only after facing some late resistance.

Scott Wightman, batting at ten, hit 43 as Thornes recovered from 56-8 to close on 140, Saif ur Rehman and Craig Wood taking three wickets apiece.

Birstall eventually won by four wickets after an unbeaten 51 from James Keen saw them home.

That victory lifted Birstall up to third place but Wrenthorpe remain top after they finished five-wicket winners at Altofts (145).
