Joe Sayers is confident Yorkshire are well enough equipped to end their recent Taunton jinx when they face struggling Somerset on Tuesday.
The White Rose county are currently hot on the heels of the LV= County Championship leaders Sussex, having won three of their first five matches this season, including a three-day win over champions Warwickshire at Edgbaston last time out.
But they have lost their last three Championship fixtures at Taunton in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The first of those was when Peter Trego smashed a 54-ball century in a successful chase of 476 in 90 overs after Anthony McGrath had declared in pursuit of a final day win for the visitors.
Steve Patterson is the only member of an inexperienced pace attack in that match who will be in line to play tomorrow, although he will not share the bowling duties with Liam Plunkett after he was ruled out for at least a fortnight with a thigh strain over the weekend.
Opening batsman Sayers believes Yorkshire have shown “a ruthless determination to very basic cricket, which has put us up there among the best sides in the country” this summer.
And comparing the county’s situation now to 2009, he said: “It’s certainly a very different looking side going down there this time from an experience point of view. But we’re also fully aware that Somerset are a strong side and a tough one to beat on their home ground.
“What the club needed from that time until now was the maturing of some young fringe players and looking around the field at Edgbaston, from Tim Bresnan at the top of his mark to Gale, Patterson, Rashid, Lyth, myself, Hodd and Liam Plunkett, we’ve all matured having played a lot of cricket together down the years. It has massively benefited the team.”
Play will start at 12pm for Tuesday’s first day because Yorkshire are in 40-over action against Middlesex at Radlett tomorrow.
