Birstall hope to maintain their bright start to the season in the Solly Sports Central Yorkshire League Premier Division when they entertain Wakefield Thornes on Saturday, fresh from a resounding nine-wicket win at reigning champions Wrenthorpe.

In a rain-shortened game, Birstall restricted the home side to 132-7 and then James Byrne, the pick of the bowlers with 3-32, hit 100 not out out off 56 balls to seal a nine wicket win with 13 overs to spare.

Batley looked up against it after former Cleckheaton man Marcus Walmsley (70 not out) and Michael Waite (55 not out) put on 98 for the fifth wicket in Methley's 182-4 but they hit back in style to secure a four-wicket win with 11 balls to spare.

Batley now entertain Mirfield Parish, who had a washed-out game at home to Carlton, while Ossett face a tough game at Townville after crashing to a 105-run defeat at Wakefield Thornes.

Division One saw a wash-out for Ossett A, at home to Mirfield, Scholes, Hopton Mills, Liversedge and Buttershaw St Paul's.

They are hoping for better luck this week as Mirfield have a derby with Hopton Mills, Ossett A take on Liversedge, Scholes are at home to Methley A, and St Paul's go to Wakefield St Michael's.

There was disappointment for Westwood Park. Having lifted themselves into third place, they were denied by the weather from making progress at the expense of bottom club Caribbean.

They are now due to face Wakefield St Michael's A at Skylark Avenue.
