Yorkshire completed a resounding three-day victory over reigning champions Warwickshire at Edgbaston yesterday to serve notice to the rest of Division One that they are genuine title contenders.

The White Rose side wrapped up their third LV= County Championship win in their last four matches by an innings and 139 runs - only the home side’s second defeat in their last 26 outings.

After Adil Rashid notched an unbeaten 110 off 158 balls before lunch as Yorkshire posted 407 in their first innings in reply to 128, Warwickshire were bowled out for just 140 inside 40 overs.

Tim Bresnan, Ryan Sidebottom and Steve Patterson all claimed three wickets as the Bears failed to recover from a damaging 20-minute spell before lunch, in which they slipped to 9-3.

Yorkshire claimed 23 points and coach Jason Gillespie said: “The first game of the season against Sussex we didn’t perform well at all.

“But the way the lads have bounced back, they are showing how good they are. I thought over the three days our skills were top notch.

"They are obviously a very good side, so to come away with a victory like that is very pleasing.”

Yorkshire overpowered Warwickshire from the moment play started at 2.30pm on Wednesday’s first day.

Rashid helped to advance their first innings from 318-7 with his second hundred in two innings this morning.

Bresnan then trapped Varun Chopra lbw with the first ball of Warwickshire’s second innings before Sidebottom removed Will Porterfield the same way with the seventh ball of the innings, also the left-armer’s first.

From then on, wickets fell regularly until Bresnan wrapped up the win just after 5pm when he had Tom Milnes caught behind.

Yorkshire are in Yorkshire Bank 40 action on Sunday against the Unicorns at Chesterfield.
