Yorkshire’s persistence began to reap dividends on the final day against Derbyshire when they claimed three wickets shortly before tea to remain on course for victory.

Starting their second innings 202 runs adrift with 84 overs left in the match, Derbyshire slumped to 157-6 at tea, still trailing by 45 with 35 overs remaining, after Jack Brooks claimed two wickets and Adil Rashid another shortly before the interval.

Former Northants seamer Brooks, who joined Yorkshire during the winter, ended a stubborn 92-run fourth-wicket stand spanning 26 overs when Wes Durston clipped him to mid-wicket, and was followed four overs later by Wayne Madsen falling lbw for 52.

Rashid claimed a further breakthrough shortly before tea when David Wainwright played on.

Yorkshire had resumed the final day 122 runs ahead on 597-5, and went looking for quick runs before declaring 50 minutes after the start having added 80 runs in ten overs with Rashid hitting an unbeaten 36 off 36 balls.

That effort took Yorkshire to 677-7 before they declared, taking them past their previous highest score of 662 against Derbyshire at Chesterfield in 1898.

It was their joint fourth highest championship total in history and the equal highest at Headingley, matching the total against Durham in 2006.

The declaration gave them a minimum of 84 overs to bowl Derbyshire out, and three wickets before lunch put Yorkshire firmly in control.

Tim Bresnan gave them a flying start by winning an lbw against Billy Godleman with an inswinger in the third over before tempting Chesney Hughes into edging to second slip, and Liam Plunkett secured the big wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the over before lunch.
