Joe Root delivered back-to-back centuries for Yorkshire today by progressing to three figures and leading the charge towards wiping out the first-innings deficit against Derbyshire at Headingley.
The Yorkshire and England batsman has already shown his pedigree this summer, hitting a match-winning 182 to help secure a thrilling victory at Durham on Saturday and followed that with an unbeaten 130 before lunch on the third day.
His innings helped Yorkshire progress from a 311-run deficit overnight to reach 251-3 at lunch on the third day, trailing by 224 runs, having brought up his sixth first-class century with his 12th boundary - a clip through mid-wicket off seamer Jonathan Clare.
Derbyshire’s only breakthrough of the morning session came two overs later when Root’s mix-up with Phil Jaques led to the Australian batsman being run out for 39 after changing his mind about stealing a quick single.
Captain Andrew Gale’s early-season struggles continued when he also fell shortly before lunch, picking out mid-off as he attempted to drive former Yorkshire spinner David Wainwright down the ground, but Root remained undefeated and will have his sights set on another big score later today.
