Derbyshire second-wicket pair Chesney Hughes and Wayne Madsen ensured the visitors made a solid start to their LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley today, reaching lunch at 89-1 from 29 overs.
Tim Bresnan struck early after Andrew Gale won his first toss of the season, forcing Billy Godleman to edge to Joe Root at third slip.
But Hughes and Madsen then batted positively during a stand of 79, playing a number of eye-catching strokes on the way to 42 and 36 not out respectively.
Yorkshire opted to replace the rested Ryan Sidebottom with Jack Brooks following their stunning Division One win over Durham on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have been named in the England Lions team for next week’s four-day clash with New Zealand at Leicester (May 9).
Root will captain the side and they will both miss the County Championship match against Somerset.
