Roy Webster, who holds the record for wicketkeeping dismissals in the Dales Council League, has died aged 70 after a long illness.
Notable for his sideways stance behind the stumps due to an early footballing injury, he claimed 511 victims in 327 games for Oxford Place, Smith Sports, Farsley Celtic and Croma.
Webster, who captained the formidable Smith Sports to the double in 1976 as stand-in to Kenny Booth, won the league’s wicketkeeping prize in 1973, 1975, 1976 (when he claimed a league record 52 dismissals), 1977, 1979 and 1980.
He also showed his bravery and quality by standing up to Smith’s trio of fast bowlers – Booth, Dave Benn and Laurie Herbert – and won seven medals in the league and three in the cup.
Webster shrugged off the pain from his injured knee to keep all day (10.30am-7.15pm) in the league’s inaugural single-wicket competition in 1973 at Esholt.
His funeral is at St Mark’s Methodist Church, Swinnow Lane, Bramley on Wednesday (noon), followed by a committal service at Rawdon Crematorium at 2.20pm.
