Bradford Mutual Sunday School League side Great Horton Methodists enter their centenary campaign when the season starts on Saturday.

The club, located off Hollingwood Lane, boasts a rich history, having won both the Sir James Roberts Cup and the H Broadbent Trophy five times since 1950, along with several league titles and promotions.

Great Horton Meths will be fielding two teams this year for the first time in a decade, with the firsts starting at VVS Laxmans on Saturday and the seconds at home to Parkside.

Chairman John Bond said: “I’m delighted and privileged to have been involved with this club for around 15 years.

“However, there are a lot of people who have put their life and soul into it for a lot longer than me and it’s a credit to them that we’re still in existence.

“Without volunteers, including players wives, girlfriends and family, we wouldn’t be here today and I take my hat off to them all.

“It’s also an appropriate time to reflect and pay tribute to people who have been linked to the club since 1913 who have sadly passed away.”

The club revolves around the local pub, The Monkey (formally the Reservoir), on Great Horton Road and has done so for many years.

Former players and patrons of the pub take a keen interest in the teams and help support them through fund raisers, raffles and bonus ball competitions.

Current landlord Chris Covill added: “It’s great to see the lads in here every Saturday and to be involved in something which is clearly part of the local community.

“It’s clear that many of my customers are ex-players and that they consider themselves part of the Great Horton Meths family."

The club, which has lots of things planned to celebrate its century milestone throughout the year, kick off this Saturday evening with a fundraising evening at The Monkey, including a food hamper raffle.

First team captain Gareth Llewellyn said: “Although we have two teams this year, we’re always looking for new players.

“Any players aged 14 or over, or anyone just wishing to get involved with the running of the club can contact me on ahspain@yahoo.co.uk.”
