Lightcliffe skipper Chris Taylor rates Charlie Roebuck’s unbeaten 126 against Bradford & Bingley last week as the best innings he has seen in league cricket.
And he is hoping the former England under-19 player continues where he left off as his side look to put one over Woodlands in JCT600 Bradford League Division One again tomorrow.
Roebuck’s stunning century suggested he is more than capable of replacing York-shire’s Alex Lees at the top of the order for Lightcliffe, who were the first side to beat the champions in the league last season.
And Taylor, who made 22 at the other end in an unbeaten opening partnership of 156 in just 26.1 overs, said: “I saw the best innings I’ve ever seen in league cricket.
“He played out of his skin and I just hope it continues.
“Bingley have a good attack and he took them to the cleaners.
“Charlie has a lot of talent but suffered a stress fracture in his back and didn’t play for two years which affected his confidence.
“But he could play at first-class level, certainly in one-day or Twenty20 cricket. He is that good.”
The 21-year-old has been on Yorkshire’s books, making one appearance for the first team against India A in 2010.
Having thrashed Bradford & Bingley by ten wickets, Taylor is determined to continue that momentum against the champions at Albert Terrace tomorrow.
Victory would send a clear message that last year’s runners-up finish was no fluke and Taylor believes it would also be good for the league.
Woodlands were unbeaten for 15 games before Lightcliffe overcame them last August. A late stutter by the leaders led to an exciting climax but Taylor wants to see teams putting them under pressure sooner.
He said: “We need sides to start beating Woodlands early. It is better from a neutral’s point of view rather than them winning 12 on the bounce.
“But they are a quality side. On their day they are as good a club team as any in the country and Brian Pearson has recruited well again.
“I have a lot of respect for them and we will need to play out of our skin to beat them. We have to treat it like our cup final.”
Yorkshire’s Mohin Ashraf is again set to feature for Lightcliffe.
Elsewhere, Bradford & Bingley face another tough test as they entertain East Bierley, who will also be looking to bounce back from defeat following last week’s narrow loss to Pudsey Congs, who host Saltaire.
Cleckheaton welcome Pud-sey St Lawrence as both sides seek to build on winning starts, while Hanging Heaton welcome Baildon after easily defeating the other promoted side, Morley, last week.
The Leeds side head to Manningham Mills.
New Farnley’s credentials will be put to the test in Division Two. After winning at Yeadon on their debut, they host Undercliffe tomorrow and head to Keighley on Sunday.
