Durham’s Phil Mustard is threatening to undo all of Yorkshire’s good work with ball during the opening day of their latest LV= County Championship match at the Riverside.
Seven wickets fell during the opening afternoon to put Yorkshire in their driving seat as the hosts slipped from 94-2 to 112-7 at its worst. But the last three wickets have put on 122 and counting, and Mustard’s unbeaten 67 has been central to an impressive recovery.
Durham have reached tea at 234-9 from 72 overs.
England bowler Tim Bresnan, returning to competitive action from elbow surgery, added the scalps of Will Smith (42), Ben Stokes and Paul Collingwood to Keaton Jennings this morning. Steve Patterson, Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid also struck.
Smith found Sidebottom at long-leg as he aimed a pull at Bresnan, leaving the score at 94-3 in the 40th over, before Stokes feathered behind to Jonny Bairstow at the end of the same over.
Dale Benkenstein edged Patterson to Joe Root at third slip before Collingwood inside-edged a Bresnan delivery onto his leg-stump. And Durham were 112-7 when Plunkett trapped Scott Borthwick lbw with a toe-crushing yorker.
Mustard and Thorp, in particular, then threw the bat in search for some valuable runs. They added 41 for the eighth wicket. Rashid marked his return to LV= County Championship action after missing the first game by bowling Thorp with his sixth ball.
Mustard and Graham Onions (27) shared 44 in 6.2 overs before the latter was run out by Patterson off his own bowling.
Mustard and Chris Rushworth will resume their unbroken tenth-wicket stand of 37 after tea, which was delayed due to nine wickets being down.
