Yorkshire were frustrated by third-wicket pair Will Smith and Dale Benkenstein during the opening morning of their LV= County Championship Division One match against Durham at the Riverside.
Tim Bresnan, with his first ball, and Ryan Sidebottom struck to remove openers Keaton Jennings and Mark Stoneman to leave the hosts 8-2 after they had elected to bat first.
Jennings had his off-stump removed in the second over as Bresnan snuck one through the gate before Stoneman inside-edged a Sidebottom delivery onto his pad, only to see it loop up to a diving Liam Plunkett at fourth slip.
Yorkshire bowled well this morning, although Plunkett conceded 27 runs from five overs upon his return to his former home, and there will be times when they bowl worse and have a team reeling at 50-5.
But Smith and Benkenstein, dropped on seven at second slip by Adam Lyth off Sidebottom, batted with good judgement. They may have played and missed at a number of deliveries but also left well and pounced on anything loose.
They resumed on 72-2 from 31 overs this afternoon, with Benkenstein on 30 and Smith 29.
