Shepley, winners in 2011, were the biggest casualties in yesterday's Solly Sports Heavy Woollen Cup first-round ties.

They suffered a six-run defeat at Baildon, being restricted to 222-9 as they replied to the hosts' 228.

The Huddersfield League side looked on course for victory while opener Danny Wood - a winner with Wrenthorpe in 2012 - was at the wicket. He was the cornerstone of their innings with 76.

After he was dismissed by left-arm spinner Mushtaq Ahmed (3-39), the innings went into decline.

Sohail Raz (3-26) bowled well and enjoyed a fine all-round performance after top-scoring with 55 in the Baildon innings.

New signing Simon Bailey (47) gave Raz good support in the face of steady bowling from skipper Dan Glover (3-41) and Liam Wiles (3-43).

Three more high-profile sides to bow out were Woodlands, Delph & Dobcross and Methley.

Woodlands suffered a 26-run defeat against their JCT600 Bradford League rivals Pudsey Congs.

Their top-order batting collapsed against the pace bowling of Mubtada Akhtar (4-21) and never recovered.

They were dismissed for 106 in reply to a Congs total of 132, with only skipper Pieter Swanepoel (35) and Usman Salim (31) making an impression.

Swanepoel had earlier taken 3-22 as he and Sarfraz Ahmed (3-30) made the Congs side battle for their runs.

Ibby Latif hit an unbeaten 106 as Mirfield Parish Cavaliers chased down a Methley total of 261 to secure a two-wicket win.

Latif received good support from David Whitelock (75) as Mirfield judged their run chase well.

For Methley, opener Marcus Walmsley made 100 and Richard Foster (73), but their efforts couldn't spare their side from defeat.

Delph & Dobcross bowed out in a bowl-out after their match with Bradford League newcomers New Farnley was halted by rain.

Delph were 25-1 in reply to New Farnley's 253-6 when play was halted. Paul Ross (86) and Nick Walker (57) were the top scorers for New Farnley, who won the bowl-out 2-1.

Holders Wrenthorpe opened their bid for a sixth cup triumph in seven years with a seven-wicket win over Clayton West. Joe Ellis made 44 as Wrenthorpe eased to victory.

There was a thrilling game at Barkisland, where the home side defeated Hartshead Moor by one wicket.

Hartshead Moor looked to have little chance when they were bowled out for 110, with Matt Steers taking 4-27 and Dan Sykes (3-31), but Barkisland also faltered in the face of good bowling by Nathan Madden (4-13) and Will Smith (3-20) and limped to victory.

Eric Austin, part of Wrenthorpe's 2012 winning team, helped his new club Birstall to a ten-wicket win over Golcar.

He made 65 and was supported by Rob McFarlane (45) as Birstall made 198 before dismissing their opponents for 188.

The best bowling performance came from Hanging Heaton skipper Mark Lawson in his side's seven-wicket win at Ossett. The former Yorkshire and Derbyshire leg spinner took 6-22 as Ossett were dismissed for 100.

Former Spen Victoria batsman Tim Walton hit 54 as Townville defeated his old club by eight wickets. Kylinn Varhan (55no) and Jonathan Booth (46) also made important contributions as Spen Victoria's total of 195-9 was overhauled.

Tosh Baker hit 50 and Peter Jackson (32) for Spen, while Jonathan Booth was the best Townville bowler with 4-33.

Spen's neighbours Cleckheaton also lost as they went down by four wickets to Pontefract League side Streethouse.

Ian Wood hit an unbeaten in Cleckheaton's 161, while Liam Geddis (56no) steered Streethouse to their target.

Haroon Rashid - elder brother of Yorkshire's Adil Rashid - made 79 as Skelmanthorpe scored 270-6 as they defeated 2011 finalists Gomersal by 61 runs. Max Senior hit an unbeaten 55 for Gomersal.

Yeadon defeated Kirkburton by 22 runs in a match reduced to 30 overs a side. Ben Elvidge (60) and James Todd (35) helped Yeadon post a score of 148-5. Kirkburton were restricted to 126-7.

Mark Hydes hit 53 as Liversedge edge out Buttershaw St Paul's by ten runs, while Wakefield Thorned brushed aside Shelley by eight wickets.

Matthew Varley (4-10) and David Toft (4-32) bowled out Shelley for 115 to set up the win.

Huddersfield League side Scholes clinched their second-round place after a bowl-out win over Jer Lane.

Rain halted play with Scholes 38-0 after ten overs chasing 220 to win. Micky Hustler made 75 not out in Jer Lane's 219-8.
