Bradfordian Adil Rashid has moved a step closer to a return to Yorkshire’s LV= County Championship team for next Wednesday’s trip to Durham.

The leg-spinning all-rounder impressed during the county’s three-day friendly against Lancashire at Headingley, which finished today, by scoring a century on Wednesday and taking a wicket in either innings.

There are question marks over off-spinner Azeem Rafiq’s fitness, and he will be assessed by the White Rose medical team tomorrow: “He’s got a couple of little niggles that we want to get on top of,” confirmed coach Jason Gillespie.

So there could not have been a better time for Rashid to step up and show glimpses of his undoubted talent.

It has been a frustrating couple of years for the 25-year-old, who has only taken one five-wicket haul in his last 25 Championship matches, which has contributed to him losing his tag as the club’s No 1 spinner to Rafiq.

He also hit the headlines for the wrong reasons recently when he aired his frustrations in an interview, which also included criticisms of captain Andrew Gale.

“He was a frustrated lad at the end of last season, and he completely regretted the piece,” said Gillespie.

“We’ve moved on, and there is absolutely no issue for us. The last few months, Rash has been sensational with his attitude and the way he’s got stuck into his cricket. He has done everything he could to put himself in the frame for the squad for Durham.

“I thought he batted beautifully, and that’s the Rash we know. He bowled very well, and we want him tossing the ball up and spinning it hard.”

Both sides agreed to bat for 45 overs apiece today, leaving the result of match irrelevant after their first innings during days one and two.

Lancashire posted 163-3. Tim Bresnan took 2-23 from ten overs, including the wickets of Stephen Moore and Tom Smith (89).

Phil Jaques’ 56 then anchored Yorkshire’s 164-7, although they lost their last four wickets for just two runs. Gale scored 14 and Joe Root 23.
