Joe Root, Adam Lyth, Andrew Gale and Phil Jaques all fell cheaply before lunch during the second day of Yorkshire’s three-day friendly against Lancashire at Headingley.

The Red Rose county declared their first innings overnight on 269-7, and the home side began their reply under overcast skies this morning.

Yorkshire have reached lunch on 51-4 in the 25th over. Jonny Bairstow is unbeaten on four.

There was a brief stoppage due to a problem with the sightscreen at the Kirkstall Lane End of the ground during the fourth over of play before Root picked up a couple of boundaries with a leg glance off Kyle Hogg and a back-foot punch off Wayne White.

Hogg picked up two of the four wickets to fall in a probing seven-over spell with the new ball, getting Root caught behind for 11 and Lyth trapped lbw for 14.

Oliver Newby then matched his team-mate, who he replaced from the Rugby Stand End, when he trapped an out-of-sorts Gale lbw for four to leave the score at 46-3 in the 19th over, and then got Jaques the same way for 14 with the final ball of the session.
