Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie has admitted that his team failed to meet their first challenge in Division One of the LV= County Championship but has insisted that Andrew Gale's men will not be "jumping at shadows" following their innings and 12-run defeat to Sussex.

Ed Joyce's men needed only 25 minutes yesterday morning to wrap up their deserved victory, with Gary Ballance's hard-fought 63 being the only saving grace as far as the scattering of Yorkshire spectators were concerned.

The defeat was Yorkshire's first in 19 four-day games since 2011, and Gillespie ws keen to balance merited criticism with a sense of perspective.

"We've had a good chat and we know what we didn't do well in the Sussex game," he said. "But we don't want to harp on it, we don't want to jump at shadows or start second-guessing ourselves.

"We had five months of really good pre-season and we had a really good trip to Barbados, so for us to start second guessing ourselves after one game would be premature.

"The key for us is to learn from what we didn't do well. Sussex batted better than us and they bowled better than us and when that happens you tend to go down in games. The lads are incredibly disappointed with their performance here.

“To get bowled out for 96 is unacceptable,” he added, referring to Yorkshire ’s supine first-innings display.

“We all acknowledge that and we’ve had a couple of really good chats as a team. The batters put their hand up and said it wasn’t good enough. We have to find a way not just to survive but to thrive out there and score runs.

“It’s far too early to make too many comparisons between Division One and Division Two,” said Gillespie.

“But we knew from the start of the season that the standard of cricket was gong to be very good and that it was going to challenge us. It challenged us here and we weren’t up to it. We’ve got to find a way to turn that around.”
