Yorkshire’s batsmen endured a tough morning on the first day of their opening LV= County Championship Division One match against Sussex at Headingley.
By the interval the White Rose batsmen had struggled to 40-4 off 30 overs – and even that represented a recovery from 18-4.
That was the score when Championship debutant Alex Lees was caught behind off Chris Jordan for six, a tally which had taken the opener 51 balls to collect.
Adam Lyth had earlier played on to James Anyon for three and Phil Jaques was lbw to Steve Magoffin for just a couple of runs.
Skipper Andrew Gale edged Jordan’s second ball of the morning to Ben Brown behind the stumps to leave the home side on 11-3 in the 14th over.
By lunch Jonny Bairstow and Gary Ballance had mounted something of a recovery, Bairstow being unbeaten on 21 and Ballance three not out.
But Anyon’s figures of 10-6-5-1 tell the story of the morning – as does the fact that it took Yorkshire’s batsmen 70 minutes to hit their first boundary on their return to English cricket’s top tier.
