Adil Rashid has been forced into an apology over comments he made two-and-a-half months ago regarding his future at Yorkshire and criticism of Andrew Gale’s captaincy.
The Bradford-born leg-spinner revealed his frustration over his dip in form and lack of opportunities to the Cricket Paper and the Independent newspaper on January 24, even though the articles have only been published within the last week.
There is no doubt that the county will have been furious with the 25-year-old, who has been named in a 13-man squad for tomorrow’s LV= County Championship opener against Sussex at Headingley. But they and he say it is now water under the bridge.
Rashid, who only played ten Championship matches last season due to poor form, had said in the original interview: “I’ve been playing here seven years and I want to stay. But I have a career. I can’t waste another year. If I don’t feel I’ve been treated well, I’ll go.
“The captain knows what I can do because I’ve got 200-plus first-class wickets. He should have thought ‘he’s done this in the past, I need to back him’.
“(Michael Vaughan) used to set defensive fields and just bowl me. He never doubted me. With Galey, it’s changed. A couple of overs and that’s it, you’re not bowling again for a long time. I don’t think it’s fair.”
Then yesterday he had to explain his actions in a Yorkshire statement: It said: “It was an error of judgement to make those comments to the media back in January. I am fully committed to Yorkshire and I look forward to being part of the club’s plans in the future.
“I have personally spoken to Andrew Gale and (director of professional cricket) Martyn Moxon.
“Yorkshire is a great club and there is a very positive atmosphere within the squad. I just want to concentrate on my game and work hard to be part of Yorkshire’s aim for success in 2013.”
Off-spinner Azeem Rafiq should play ahead of Rashid in tomorrow’s Division One opener.
Yorkshire squad (v Sussex): Gale (capt), Ashraf, Bairstow (wkt), Ballance, Brooks, Jaques, Lees, Lyth, Patterson, Plunkett, Rafiq, Rashid, Sidebottom.
